Work Wear…But Make it Summer Ready Jul 19 Written By Stephanie Kinsman In the heat of the summer, remaining cool while also looking professional for work can be a challenge. All of a sudden your layered suiting look feels a little more like a sweaty mess waiting to happen. So how do we beat the heat this summer while remaining work wear ready? Whether you’re shopping for summer workwear or rethinking the wardrobe you have, I’ve put together three tips to help make sure you hit your professional style goals no matter what level of dress you maintain in your work environment. Ready to stay cool? Let’s dive in. ColourSummer is a time for fun! Even your work wear should reflect this change in the season. Often we hesitate to incorporate colour into our work wardrobe because we don’t want to be too loud or too fun. Well, I’m here to tell you to discard that dressing mentality immediately! As long as you are looking put together, you are allowed to incorporate colour, and summer is one of the best times to play with a brighter pallet. If this is something that intimidates you, start small, maybe with just a pop of colour in an accessory and as you get more comfortable, feel free to experiment, even bringing in a brighter colour with a blouse or skirt. The sky’s the limit when it comes to colour so give yourself the space to have some fun! FabricStaying cool is key in the hot months of July and August and unsurprisingly fabric is a huge part of avoiding over-heating in the blistering summer months. I recommend staying away from anything synthetic if you can, simply because this kind of fabric doesn’t breathe. More synthetic fabrics are often used in blazers, dress pants, and the like so taking a moment to look at your cloth’s fabric tags is worth the read. Instead, focus your attention on fabrics like cotton and linen. They’re season appropriate and their breeziness will have you thinking it’s not actually that hot out. Magic! SilhouetteSummer is the time of year when we can let silhouettes relax a bit. Feel free to wear pieces that don’t hug the body as much, and instead fall away for a more breezy fit. Think boxy, a-line, or empire, silhouettes that don’t completely lose you under the garment but give you the feeling of movement. One of my favourites is this empire t-shirt dress which has great lines while still bringing a relaxed element. The trick to bringing a look like this together is the accessories, adding in elevated pieces to avoid looking too casual. Try for a heal and a clutch and you’re good to go!
