How to Get the Most out of Your Summer Wardrobe

Although we still have another week in August, a slight chill in the morning air reminds us that fall is closer than we think. Soon we’ll be pulling out our much-loved knitwear and light jackets to protect us from the briskness of transitioning from summer to fall. But, let’s not get too ahead of ourselves, there is still so much beautiful sunlight and warmth to enjoy in the coming weeks, not to mention the inevitable September heatwave. So before you say goodbye to your warm-weather staples, here are my top tips on getting the most out of your summer wardrobe as we transition into fall.

Embrace Neutrals

A white tank is an obvious summer staple, but not one we have to instantly say goodbye to as we move closer to labour day. Classic white tees or tanks can become a beautiful base when paired with neutrals, such as this grey vest and black pants. Darker neutrals are what help anchor the white into more of a prefall-friendly colour pallet, making it more season-appropriate than say a white tank and white jeans.

Light Layers

Summer isn’t usually a season of layering what with trying not to melt in the hot sun, but as we close out August, this time of year is when you want to start adding light layers back into your daily outfit cycles, such as thin cardigans or breathable dusters. Pieces like these are the hard workers of this transitional season, as they will keep you comfortable throughout the day no matter what the weather decides to do. You can absolutely still wear your cotton tees, skirts and dresses, but it’s good to consider an additional layer to these looks.

Add Structure

Often times summer style is filled with light, breathable fabrics and relaxed silhouettes. One way we can prepare our style in transitioning to fall is by adding elements of structure back into our daily style. Think less breezy and more tailored! A simple way of achieving this without adding too much extra fabric is by belting a free-flowing summer dress with a neutral-coloured belt. By doing this, you’ll be able to maintain the breathable fabrics while adding a little polish that we typically see more of come fall.
