Event Dressing 101

June has finally arrived, ushering in the ever-busy, bustling and beautiful event season, including birthday celebrations, showers, weddings, bachelorettes, you name it! Summer is always a season that has us defaulting to the back of our closets where our dresses, suits or jumpsuits live, waiting for us to dust them off for the next special occasion. Putting together a look for a special event can be challenging. There’s a lot to think about from weather, venue, and level of dress, so I’ve put together some easy tips for creating the perfect look for any occasion, no matter what’s on your summer calendar.

The Birthday Party

Celebrating another year around the sun for someone you love is always special, even more so when they invite you to celebrate with them! Dressing up for a birthday party is likely the easiest of the four categories here because you don’t have to think about brides, babies, or family (for the most part). When putting together a look for a birthday party, you want to consider what kind of party it is. Are you having drinks on a patio, a decadent dinner, working as a team at an escape room, or maybe enjoying a night of dancing? These activities would all mean a somewhat different outfit, but the one thing I encourage you to maintain is your authentic style. Just be yourself and be comfortable!

The Shower

Whether it’s the celebration of a soon-to-be arriving baby, or the upcoming nuptials of dear loved ones, a shower is the perfect time for floral prints. Showers often take place during the day, so feel free to have fun with colour! An event like this typically calls for elevated day wear, such as floral printed dresses, linen or cotton fabrics or elevated separates like skirts and blouses. You want to feel casual but put together and ready to celebrate, mimosa in hand!

The Bachelorette

An event that promises to be fun and maybe even a little risque deserves an outfit that matches the vibe. For an event like a bachelorette, we often end up in a little black dress, allowing the bride to shine in white because let’s face it, it’s her moment! When creating a look featuring a little black dress, I recommend having fun with the accessories, whether it’s a pop of colour in your shoes or clutch or maybe even some statement jewelry. Just because you’re wearing black does not mean you can’t still showcase your personality, a little black dress doesn’t mean boring!

The Wedding

How many weddings are you attending this summer? If the answer is more than one, you’re not alone! A wedding will be the dressiest of the events you encounter this season, and if you are attending several, dressing for each event can be quite the task if there are overlapping guests, not to mention considerations of venue and weather. Knowing this, being more elevated than less is always a safe bet. I recommend considering options that provide a level of comfort because a wedding can be a long day regardless of whether you’re just a guest or the mother of the bride. I always suggest steering away from white, even if it’s white and another colour together, because let’s be honest, its better to be safe than sorry when it comes to upsetting the wedding party based on your look. But guess what, you have so many other colours that you can rock at a wedding, and I would even argue that wearing black is also an option! Yes, you read that right friends, it is okay to wear black to a wedding. Weddings are also a wonderful opportunity to pull out your longer, more maxi dresses that don’t get worn as often and feel the drama. Whatever you choose, be sure to focus on feeling and looking your best. Weddings can be the most special because the photographs taken will be looked at by the bride and groom for years to come, so bring your best self to the party in your authentic style and let your confidence will do the rest.
