How to Trim Your Tree Like a Designer

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of holiday decorating and Christmas is no exception. Every year I start thinking about how I can up my game or make my home feel even more cozy for the chilly holidays. Today I want to share with you some of my favourite ways to make sure your tree looks its best all season long!

Establish a Colour Pallet

As with any kind of design, having a colour pallet is a must and trees are no different! As I have a lot of vintage decorations my pallet leans into the classic red, green and white but I try to keep my decor to a more vintage aesthetic. Think Ruby Red, Hunter Green, and Snowy White, colours that scream “I’ll Be Home For Christmas!”. When it comes to a Christmas pallet, you can’t go wrong with classic combinations.

Embracing Meaningful Memories

When it comes to decorating it can quickly become about your tree looking full without having much meaning to the decorations you choose to include. I love our tree because, though it has an aesthetic and pallet, it is chock-full of memories that matter to us. Here is an ornament I gave my husband to celebrate our engagement where I actually imprinted my engagement ring into clay. Though it was stressful to make in the moment (I wasn’t sure if the clay would come off of my ring) it turned out to be a meaningful decoration we’ve held onto since. Even if something doesn’t go perfectly with your colour pallet, embrace the nostalgia and enjoy visiting memories year after year as you trim your tree and admire it on festive holiday nights.

Filling the Gaps

When you’re decorating your tree you may find that there isn’t enough to fill it out all the way around, and knowing that decorations can be expensive there are a few ways to fill the gaps. One of my favourites is to simply space out your ornaments more! Though it sounds obvious, trying to place your pieces in a criss-cross pattern on your tree will help make it feel even. Another option is to grab some ribbon and tie some bows to add to the tree’s fullness. It’s an easy option if you have any ribbon on hand and it fills spaces while adding some texture and colour.

Embracing Creativity

At the end of the day, your tree is yours and I think it should reflect the memories and good times with those you love, so embrace the funny-looking ornaments from your second-grade project, the random hand-made one you tried to create, and anything in between. Whether you’re a creative soul or not, having a tree that feels personal to you makes all the difference.
