Bringing the Outdoors In: 3 Things to Make Your Home Feel Like Summer

Summer is a magical time here in Toronto. All of a sudden the sun is shining, people are out socializing and patios have taken over the streets. But bringing the summer inside, especially when all we want to do is be outside, can be difficult. Although we wish we could spend our full days basking in the sun, we still need to be inside for work and other responsibilities, so why not take a little time and bring the outside in? Here are three simple ways to help make your home feel like summer all season long.

Plants

It is no secret that we here at AHS love plants, but as we’ve said before, being a plant mom is no small task, and we do our best to keep our green babies happy, even in small (sometimes dark) spaces. It’s not always easy, but finding a plant that is right for your home to brighten your space is one of the easiest ways to feel like nature is a little closer than outside your window. Living in a basement, I have to be a little strategic with which plants I bring in, knowing that the dew point in our place is a little high and not as much light gets through, especially in certain rooms. I’ve found luck with some cacti and our little rubber tree that’s trying it’s best to grow up, but of course trial and error is part of the game!

Fresh flowers

Adding flowers to your home is not a revolutionary idea, but we think it is worth mentioning because it can often be seen as frivolous. We love adding florals to our home if the budget allows it (even grocery store flowers are welcome, you don’t have to break the bank) because it creates a beautiful aroma, allowing for a touch of greenery where a plant wouldn’t necessarily survive. I love adding flowers to our bathroom and kitchen when I can to help brighten up the space and make it feel more vibrant and welcoming.

Natural Light

Nothing makes a room feel more lovely than one filled with natural light. Often in homes, we’re focused on keeping light out whether for privacy or for the use of screens, but we invite you to replace your black-out curtains with something a little more sheer so you can bring the light into your space. Being in a basement we like to maximize light wherever possible, adding mirrors, lighter furniture and surfaces that will reflect light instead of absorb it, creating a brighter space for our warmer, summer months.
