A Bathroom Refresh

When it comes to styling bathrooms, unless you own your home you don’t have a lot of flexibility in the look and feel of the room, what you rent is what you get. But over the years I’ve found small ways to implement tiny adjustments to make the space feel a little fresher for the warmer seasons and somewhere you actually want to spend time.

Invest in good linens

When it comes to towels, it feels so easy just to buy whatever colour you think will match the tile, or even worse just buy white to go for that big spa energy only to find that you’re needing to bleach them every time they need a rinse. Finding a happy medium with linen you enjoy that both compliments the room but also doesn’t feel like overkill is a challenging task. Don’t get me wrong it’s great to pull inspiration from your furnishings but just because you have orange tiles doesn’t mean you need orange towels to match. Instead, use your bathroom’s finishes as inspiration as you embark on this refresh journey. I went with a fun-striped olive green from our local shop Health Hut. I love this pattern because it creates visual interest but also isn’t too demanding and will play nicely with others, meaning I don’t need to also buy a new shower curtain or hand towels to make it work. Make sure your linens speak to each other and complement each other, there’s nothing worse than things not matching your dream aesthetic and losing motivation to fix it.

Decide on art

Bathroom art is one of those fickle things that I think about often. You don’t necessarily want bathroom-themed art, but instead, you want art that is calm and tranquil without feeling too much like stock imagery. A little personality can go a long way. I’ve gone with a simple text print and a postcard from a few years back that makes me happy. They are both also still in earth tones so don’t feel too drastic against the olive-striped towels.

Style your shower

Nothing makes me happier than enjoying being in my shower. Though it takes energy to keep it clean there’s something so lovely about taking the time to make sure the space you use to get clean is clean itself. We also enjoy looking for products that are pleasing to the eyes like this wall rack with solid shampoo, conditioner, and soap that looks pretty and doesn’t require a large labeled bottle taking up space in our small bathroom.

All in the details

Bathroom real estate is precious, especially in small bathrooms like ours, so when it comes to little accents and details we want to make sure that everything serves a purpose and is optimized as much as possible. Instead of just keeping our hand soap on the sink we installed a small shelf to make a little more room. We also keep a clock in the bathroom (a trick I learned from my mom) to help keep us on time in the morning as we rush out the door. Adding a little candle and matches on the back of the toilet basin helps make things feel a little more designed, especially on appliances that are necessary and immovable. Even adding a robe on the back of the door gives a bit of elegance and is a great reminder to slow down and enjoy your self-care. Give yourself the gift of a beautiful bathroom and enjoy your morning routine with a little more style.
