Wintering Well: How to Make the Most of This New Season Nov 27 Written By Nicole Campbell Though never unexpected, every year, when the time changes and our long, bright summer evenings suddenly turn dark at 5 PM, it feels like a shock to the system, leaving us lamenting for bright nights and outdoor time. This year I wanted to consider what it would mean to not only bear through the cold months of the year but to embrace them thoughtfully and make the most of nature’s annual cycle. Today I share some of the ways I will be making the most of the upcoming winter season and how you too may be able to embrace the idea of wintering well. Getting Extra Sleep I feel as if it is often forgotten that like many mammals, we too are affected by this weather change and the feelings you may have; needing to wind down, cozy up and get rest, isn’t something you feel alone. With longer darkness the need for increased rest is real so I encourage you to take the time to get the extra sleep you need, helping you feel more awake for the brief, lighter hours of the day. Making Comforting MealsThere is nothing better than a hot meal on a cold night to warm you to your bones. This is the time of year to try recipes that bring you joy, whether it be something new you’ve always wanted to try or an old favourite that never fails to bring happiness to you and those you love. This is the time to make things that bring comfort. Finding Softness With Yourself Speaking for myself, I tend to start to want to double down on to-do lists and crunch in more tasks, attempting to hit deadlines before the end of the fiscal year. Though some of these things are unavoidable, taking a look at the goals you do have a say in and asking if they’re a priority is worth evaluating. Give yourself some softness and know that the need to wind down and recharge is a real feeling that should be acknowledged and embraced. Embracing ChangeWith the changing of seasons, I often find that change starts appearing in other aspects of my life, whether it be work, play or something else. Take the time to enter this new phase with curiosity and kindness. Change is the only constant in this life so making peace with it and embracing it is essential. Traditions are often prioritized this time of year but staying open to the possibility of unexpected moments and new surprises will make winter that much sweeter. Want more self-care tips and ideas?
