Top 5 Self-Care Tips for Winter

The winter months often seem as if they drag on every year and after Christmas, it feels downhill, with one grey day after another. The dreariness seems endless and it’s of course common to feel low during these months. I feel this every year, and, I know it’s important to take extra care of myself during this time because of it! While it might feel like extra work, an extra box to check, it’s so important to do things that lift you and bring you joy, to combat the winter dread. To better support you through this challenging time of year, we’re sharing what works for us in lifting our spirits, in hopes that it will also lift yours, taking what works for you, and leaving what doesn’t.

Wear What Brings You Joy

Initially, this tip started as “Wear Bright Colours” but I recognize that’s not for everyone. We all have colours that we wear that bring us joy. For me, it is a bright colour that lifts my spirits when I put it on, but for you, it might be something more neutral colour like a rich chocolate brown or off-white. The important thing here is to wear something that makes you feel brighter, warmer and altogether happier when you put it on. Clothing can change how we feel, so choose things that make you feel your best.

Indulge in Less Screen Time

Screen time can be a bit, scratch that, a large time suck if you let it. While it is in certain moments useful and enjoyable, it doesn’t always make us feel better during months like these. I challenge you to carve out specific windows of time where you put your screen down and find other tasks or activities to fill your time with instead. Whether it’s a reading, crafting, a home project, or class, try to choose something that will leave you feeling accomplished afterward. Finishing something can be a huge boost to keep your spirits up when you’re feeling low in the winter.

Get Outside

I know it’s cold, but fresh air is good for the soul, even if it’s a quick ten minutes. I’ve found that this can take me from feeling down and out to refreshed and ready to take on the rest of what the day holds especially if you’re like me and working from home. A change of scenery is often the perfect way to avoid that feeling of being held up in your home, only going out when it’s needed, so when you feel yourself going a little stuck, get outside if you can!

Take Care of Your Skin

The winter months can be really hard on our skin, but the good news is that these isolating months are the perfect time to try new products, revamp your routine and up your skincare game. I’ve personally been trying out a lot of skincare by the women-owned, vegan and cruelty-free company, Three Ships. My skin feels great, and I feel a little joy at the start and end of my day by taking the time to show my skin some love.

Enjoy Warm Beverages

It’s a chilly time of year, so treat yourself to your favourite wonderfully warm drink. It always brings me a little joy this time of year when I make my favourite coffee in a favourite mug,  warming my heart and my body! Striving for joy daily during months that can feel, well, grey, lonely and quiet, is the most important because it’s when we need to take care of ourselves the most, and often the simplest actions can bring the most joy.
