The Joy of Creating Just for You

There’s something magical that happens when we choose to take the time to create just for the sake of it. Being creative can be an incredible outlet to relieve everyday stress pulling you out of your every day, and allowing you to utilize the right side of your brain more than you typically might. Creating, whether through painting, sculpture, pencil, crayon, woodworking, ceramics, music, or dance can be a freeing way to bring simple joy into your life. Here are our top tips for igniting a creative spark in your daily routine.

Make Space

We’re all busy with weekly commitments, work projects, and time with loved ones, but if creating is something that brings you joy it’s something you’ll need to be intentional about carving out time for. The good news is that you can put aside as little as fifteen minutes whenever you can, it doesn’t always have to be a considerable time commitment.

Know You’ll Fail

One of the things that I love about embracing the joy of creating is that it makes for a space that supports failure. This isn’t always something we typically find in life as an adult with expectations of others thrust upon us. But fifteen minutes where you can create anything you want without needing to worry about whether it’s “good” or not can be absolutely heavenly. Failure is your friend in creative endeavours because there are no right answers, only what comes out with your medium of choice. And if you don’t like it, guess what? You can produce something new and totally different the next time you sit down with your creativity hat on.

Know that it Really Doesn’t matter

No one is expecting you to instantly make the next featured art piece to sit among the greats in the Louvre. Art isn’t only about what you output but how it affects you while you create it. Whether you’re proud of what you made or prefer to put it in a closet for your eyes only, what matters is that you made the time in your life to create it. You gave yourself permission to take the time for yourself, to get outside of your head and focus on the present, and sometimes that is more valuable than any piece of art one can create.
