How To “Spring” Clean Like a Pro

As the sun starts to warm and going outside feels less like a rude awakening, it’s always exciting to turn towards your home and give yourself the gift of a clean and refreshed space. Though stereotypically we often reserve big cleans for spring, you can use these tips whatever the season, making this home-lift a little easier and help you get on with your day and enjoy your home in its peak condition.

Start with sections

I like to start my cleaning process by breaking it up into sections. Usually I’ll begin with the bathroom as it is relatively quick to tidy and work my way to the kitchen, and then the bedroom. We live in a small space so working through our home doesn’t take long, but the more space you have, the more important it is to break it up. It’s easy to look at your whole house with dread so making it small stages is an easier way to keep your motivation.

Clear Surfaces

Before I start doing any cleaning at all, I clear any surfaces that wouldn’t normally be cluttered. So any open mail, change, keys or phones can be put away, any products or appliances can be stored back on their respective shelves. By clearing your spaces you can actually properly clean your surfaces without it feeling so hectic.

Begin In Each Space With High To Low

I like to start at the uppermost spot and work my way down in a room. So for the kitchen, starting with the cupboard doors, windowsills, and backsplash so that whatever dirt and grime you wipe off falls towards the next surface your about to clean. Thank you gravity!

Time to Dust

Dusting is one of the tasks that is truly never done, but taking a moment with a wet cloth to run over any knick knacks, then lifting to dust surfaces is a small act of kindness to you and your home. I like to start with a dry cloth to get any dust bunnies out of the way, then bring in a wet cleaning solution to grab any other grime

Focus On High Traffic Surfaces

In each major section of the home there are always areas that we use everyday that tend to go unseen. In the kitchen, it’s the aforementioned cabinet doors and handles, the taps, and the fridge door. In the bedroom it’s the bedsheets and any under the bed storage where dust bunnies have made a home, and of course in the bathroom it's the major appliances (aka bathtub, toilet and sink) that are worked to the bone. Take some extra care with these surfaces and items as they do the heavy lifting for us every day.

Floor Love

Finally, take some time for your floors, starting with a vacuum getting into each corner, and vacuuming any bathmats or area rugs you have in your home. For those with wood and tile, take the vacuum to these floors as well to get any dirt on the surface, then with a set cloth or mop do a quick wash. For those who are hesitant to mop your wood floors (totally hear you!) even taking your swiffer (or other mop-ajacent tools) and wetting one of the disposable wipes with water in dish soap (if you don’t have a specific hydrating wood floor cleaner for real wood floors) should do the trick. It’s not the most glamorous option but your floors will thank you for it!

Take Rest

After a job well done, take a moment to appreciate your space. Giving yourself the gift of a clean home is one of the kindest acts of self-care you can give to you and your family so take a moment, light a candle, grab a book and take some rest.
