Bringing the Love with Valentine’s Decor Feb 7 Written By Nicole Campbell Hello again, and welcome back to AHS! After what has felt like the longest, (and grayest) winter, we wanted to focus on a type of decor that doesn’t always get the same attention compared to other holidays throughout the year, Valentine’s Day! I always find the decor for this February holiday to be a little tricky for a few reasons, the big one being that I am not a huge fan of pink and red, what a roadblock! But this year I wanted to put my neutral biases aside and see if I could create something special, simple and creative that you can repeat at home. So here are my tips on how to bring a little love into your home this February. Get CreativeThis tip is no surprise for those who have visited us before. We love to challenge ourselves and create things that are unique but reusable and this occasion is no different. I opted to choose a few classic colours from the Valentine’s Day pallet and see how I could integrate them into our home without it feeling like an overwhelm to the senses. One of the easiest ways to bring this to life was by using nature! Fresh-cut flowers are beautiful and a welcome pop of colour no matter how vivid, so adding them in felt like the right move to get the ball rolling. Use What You Have When it comes to holidays I’m a big fan of using what you have first before spending money on something that will collect dust 99% of the year. Luckily my old job in a paper store came in handy and I had envelopes and ribbon on hand to make this fun and simple garland. I love this as an option because it can go anywhere and always adds a sense of occasion. This one is also created so that after the holiday if I don’t want to re-use it, I can disassemble it and repurpose the pieces. No money, no fuss, but lots of love. Keep it simple When it comes to decor, I think there’s this mindset that you have to start filling the space with themed “external” (not normally part of your decor) items, which I feel is a bit of a trap that will only lead to clutter. So, with this in mind, I instead went the route of swapping items out that would normally be there, like adding red or pink tapers instead of white, adding a pink candy dish I had in a different room and switching to a pink pillow, where a green one would normally be. I also like to adjust my art a little so the additional colour items don’t feel out of place and the look feels cohesive. Use what you’ve got and see what you can put together, but keep it simple! Make it yours At the end of the day, your home is your own, and the point of the holiday is to show the ones you love how much you care about them, so if you prefer to have a total home makeover with only red and pink to celebrate love in your life, go for it! But for me, it’s all about the subtle nods to the time of year to add a little fun without it feeling overwhelming. Find your balance and I’m sure you’ll create the Valentine’s Day decor moment you’ve been dreaming of. Want more interior inspiration?
