Finding Your Own Uniform

There’s a good chance you read the title of this piece and wondered if I’ve lost my marbles because style and uniform don’t typically go hand in hand. In fact, when we think of uniforms we often associate them with discomfort, lack of style, and the end of original dressing. However, defining a go-to uniform for yourself that reigns true to your authentic style can feel empowering and instill in you a stronger sense of your unique taste, not to mention making getting dressed in the morning that much easier.

Find what feels authentic

Your own personal uniform should be compiled of pieces that you naturally gravitate towards, and that bring you the perfect balance of confidence and comfort. For myself, this comfort always lives in a perfect-fitting pair of blue jeans and a white button-up shirt or white tee. Consider what clothes you gravitate towards on a daily basis. Is it a sweater, wide-leg jeans, maybe dresses, or something in between? Whatever your go-to pieces are, we always know what we feel best in. When we feel comfortable in our clothes, we feel more confident in how we present ourselves in the world, so finding your favourites is an important step in finding your authentic uniform.

Versatility is key

When deciding what items to include in your uniform, you want to ensure these pieces have versatility. Nothing is more gratifying than knowing you can take your look from day to night with little to no effort. When I put on my uniform of blue jeans and a white shirt, I love that I can go from work to drinks with friends with just a couple shifts in accessories including footwear, purses and jewelry. These small adjustments show the intention and time I put into a look and make them appropriate for any environment.

Don’t be afraid to go classic

A lot of the time classic pieces get a bad reputation for being boring. I’m here to tell you that this is simply not true! Clean and classic pieces are just that because they are timeless and effortless, allowing us to have a stunning canvas to create. If you are considering incorporating classic pieces into your go-to uniform, remember that pairing different varieties of a similar style (like the white t-shirt vs. a white button-down) will decide the tone of your look but will still both be equally as sophisticated in their own way without straying from your overall uniform. This keeps a base for additional pieces in your look, to highlight more complex pieces like a leather jacket, blazer or even a sweater vest. Your uniform should work as hard as you do so having a more neutral base can be a great place to start plus you’ll always look put together regardless of how much effort you actually put in. Classic pieces mean your look will always stand the test of time creating longevity in your wardrobe, and that ain't boring at all!
