Event Dressing But Make it Cost-Effective

The Holiday season will be here before you know it… A daunting thought, I know. It always manages to creep up on us as soon as we enjoy our last pumpkin spice latte of a fleeting Fall. With the return of special events, we want to support you as you prepare for any festivities that may be on your social calendar for the season. And, being the budget-savvy ladies we are, we’re bringing you our most cost-effective ways to make event dressing a snap! Let’s get glam!

Rent a Dress

I’ll let you read that again, rent a dress. Did you know that you can actually rent a dress for any occasion you might have? We love this concept!

We all know that with special events comes photography, which means your outfit is documented and with social media, it can make these looks feel stale fast if you’re recycling outfitsfrom your wardrobe from event to event. Not to mention, these looks don’t always get a lot of wear and can be costly. So, why not take some of that budget and put it towards renting a fabulous dress! Dance the night away, be photographed as much as you like and then return it when the clock strikes midnight. Cinderella wishes she had this option!

You might now be thinking, “Okay Stephanie that’s great, but does this even exist?” It certainly does. The Fitzroy in Toronto specializes in dress rental magic and even ships Canada-wide! This female lead business is the go-to spot for all your one-time wear event dressing! From birthdays, brunches, galas and everything in between, The Fitzroy has you covered no matter your style and desired vibe.

Go Vintage

We’re vintage shopping enthusiasts at AHS and this is the perfect option for being kind to your bank account and ensuring you get a look that screams unique. There are gems to be found sorting through fabrics and cuts of the past and you’re guaranteed a fun afternoon of bargain hunting and outfit creation. Best enjoyed with a good friend and coffee in hand!

Once you find something you love, I recommend pairing your look with accessories that feel more current to breathe life into your found treasure and to ensure you don’t appear as though you’re wearing a costume. Unless that’s the kind of event you’re attending, then lean in my friend! Some of our favourite Vintage shops include Black Market Vintage, Courage My Love, Tribal Rythem Vintage, Public Butter and Siberia Vintage.

Borrow From a Bestie

What are friends for if not to raid their closets and cherish their pieces as your own? As long as you’re willing to return the favour that is. Two wardrobes are always better than one, more options!

For special events, borrowing from a friend can be ideal, you know your bestie already trusts you and knows you aren’t going to intentionally spill red wine on a piece they’ve lent you. Clear liquids only when you’re borrowing! It’s also very kind on your bank account, as it likely won’t cost you a thing, maybe just a coffee or a bottle of wine to express your thanks, and a potential dry-clean for an extra touch of gratitude.

Focus on Accessories

Maybe you already have one classic little black dress, you can make this piece appear different every time you wear it simply by changing up your accessories. Think about accessories with texture, pops of colour or eye-catching hardware details. A classic outfit can provide a beautiful blank canvas for you to create new outfits over and over again that will stay fresh at multiple events over time.
